Processes Explaining the Concealment and Distortion of Evidence on Gender Symmetry in Partner Violence

[...]Graham-Kevan’s paper raises the question of how an explanatory theory and treatment modality could have persisted for 30 years and still persists, despite hundreds of studies which provide evidence that PV has many causes, not just male-dominance. The answer is that it emerged from a convergence of a number of different historical and social factors. One of these is that gender symmetry in perpetration of partner violence is inconsistent with male predominance in almost all other crimes, especially violent crimes. Another is the greater injury rate suffered by female victims of PV brings female victimization to public attention much more often.

Methods Used to Conceal and Distort Evidence on Symmetry in Partner Violence

Method 1. Suppress Evidence

Among researchers not committed to that ideology, many (including me and some of my colleagues) have withheld results showing gender symmetry to avoid becoming victims of vitriolic denunciations and ostracism (see Method 7 below). Thus, many researchers have published only the data on male perpetrators or female victims, deliberately omitting data on female perpetrators and male victims

Method 2.  Avoid Obtaining Data Inconsistent with the Patriarchal Dominance Theory

In survey research, this method of concealment asks female participants about attacks by their male partners and avoids asking them if they had hit their male partner.

Method 3. Cite Only Studies That Show Male Perpetration

I could list a large number of journal articles showing selective citation, but instead I will illustrate the process with official document examples to show that this method of concealment and distortion is institutionalized in publications of governments, the United Nations, and the World Health Organization.

Method 4. Conclude That Results Support Feminist Beliefs When They Do Not

The studies cited above, in addition to illustrating selective citation, there are also examples of the ability of ideological commitment to lead researchers to misinterpret the results of their own research.

Method 5. Create Evidence by Citation

The Kernsmith study, the World Health Organization report, and the pattern of selective citation show how ideology can be converted into what can be called “evidence by citation” or what Gelles (1980) calls the “woozle effect.” A woozle effect occurs when frequent citation of previous publications that lack evidence mislead us into thinking there is evidence.

Method 6. Obstruct Publication of Articles and Obstruct Funding Research That Might Contradict the Idea that Male Dominance Is the Cause of PV

I have documentation for only one case of publication being blocked, but I think this has often happened. The more frequent pattern is self-censorship by authors fearing that it will happen or that publication of such a study will undcrn1ine thcir reputation, and, in the case of graduate students, the ability to obtain a job.

An example of denying funding to research that might contradict the idea that PV is a male-only crime is the call for proposals to investigate partner violence issued in December 2005 by the National Institute of Justice. The announcement stated that proposals to investigate male victimization would not be eligible

Method 7. Harass, Threaten, and Penalize Researchers Who Produce Evidence That Contradicts Feminist Beliefs

Suzanne Steinmetz made the mistake of publishing a book and articles (Steinmetz 1977, 1977-1978) which clearly showed about equal rates of perpetration by males and females. Anger over this resulted in a bomb threat at her daughters’ wedding, and she was the object of a letter writing campaign to deny her promotion and tenure at the University of Delaware. Twenty years later the same processes resulted in a lecturer at the University of Manitoba whose dissertation found gender symmetry in PV being denied promotion and tenure. My own experiences have included having one of my graduate students being warned at a conference that she will never get a job if she does her PhD research with me. At the University of Massachusetts, I was prevented from speaking by shouts and stomping.

Amazing listing. We are awe-struck. With such faulty research based dirty methods, world politics are changed. The legislation of nations and continents are changed. Victimization theories, harassment laws, rape legislation, and sexist laws like Violence against WOMEN act are justified. Family courts victimize men and prevent the healthy development of their offspring. All this justified by systematical falsification of research!

The seven methods described above have created a climate of fear that has inhibited research and publication on gender symmetry in PV and largely explain why an ideology and treatment modality has persisted for 30 years, despite hundreds of studies which provide evidence on the multiplicity of risk factors for PV, of which patriarchy is only one.

Women, he believes, methodically engineer their own paltry pay. They choose psychically fulfilling jobs, like librarian or art historian, that attract enough applicants for the law of supply and demand to kick in and depress pay. They avoid well-paid but presumably risky work – hence, the paucity of women flying planes. And they tend to put in fewer hours than men – no small point, he says, because people who work 44 hours a week make almost twice as much as those who work 34 and are more likely to be promoted. NYT

The Census Bureau did find that women earned 76 cents for every dollar paid to a male (now up to 80 cents on the dollar), but that was a raw number, not adjusted for comparable jobs and responsibility. A new book, Why Men Earn More by Warren Farrell, goes further, examining a broad array of wage statistics. His conclusion: When reasonable adjustments are made, women earn just as much as men, and sometimes more.

Some of Farrell’s findings: Women are 15 times as likely as men to become top executives in major corporations before the age of 40. Never-married, college-educated males who work full time make only 85 percent of what comparable women earn. Female pay exceeds male pay in more than 80 different fields, 39 of them large fields that offer good jobs, like financial analyst, engineering manager, sales engineer, statistician, surveying and mapping technicians, agricultural and food scientists, and aerospace engineer. A female investment banker’s starting salary is 116 percent of a male’s. Part-time female workers make $1.10 for every $1 earned by part-time males.

Surprisingly, Farrell argues that comparable males and females have been earning similar salaries for decades, though the press has yet to notice. As long ago as the early 1980s, he writes, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that companies paid men and women equal money when their titles and responsibilities were the same. In 1969, data from the American Council on Education showed that female professors who had never been married and had never published earned 145 percent of their male counterparts’ pay. Even during the 1950s, Farrell says, the gender pay gap for all never-married workers was less than 2 percent while never-married white women between 45 and 54 earned 106 percent of what their white male counterparts made.   USNews

Over 6 years ago, Warren Farrell debunked the pay gap myth and clearly explained all the reasons for income differences between men and women. Thus he gave all the means needed for women to not only close the pay gap but actually earn more and invert the pay gap.

3. Parents might enforce exaggerated and unworthy goals with violent spanking? That, of course, raises other questions of parental power and freedom in general. Spanking a child for not going to church, for having homosexual tendencies, for not training mother’s pet sport? I see the problem, but what about parents enforcing such behaviors with other punishments, psychological cruelty, time out, withholding of financial resources etc.

Applying these rules to uncontrollable criminally minded looters and hooligans has terrible effects: good citizen’s physical integrity, lives, health, financial integrity get destroyed by such criminals.

Killing a few rioters might save lives of innocent people. At least it can prevent HUGE property damage and suffering for millions of citizens who stay locked at home in fear instead of proceeding with their normal productive lives. Order and safety for ordinary citizens should be above the rights of violent dangerous felons.

Humanely arresting a marauding crowd of arsonists is not practical. It will not protect safety and property of good citizens, it will not stop and prevent imminent danger.

Put a camera on the sights of the guns of police. Make sure that everyone shot was engaged in an act of dangerous violence, with arms, crow bars, Molotov Cocktails, and was not in self defense against criminals. If non-lethal violence can be used. But don’t be shy to use deadly force. One can even arrest an entire crowd: have you seen 5 policemen controlling a huge crowd of riotous prisoners, lying on the ground? The prisoners know, one false move and they get shot.

Using lethal force, there will be inevitable collateral damage. Certainly less damage then done by week-long riots.This damage should be accepted and excused, provided it can be shown to be accidental and due to true honest mistakes. Honest serious policemen, and citizens defending their life and property should be excused in case of honest battlefield mistakes.

Yes, we want to provoke to think different. Yes we see that there are problems in our attitude. We see that there are serious problem in the unquestioning humanitarianism that protects criminals and creates havoc.

The small crowds of very young men and women, of every skin colour, typically dressed in almost identical hooded sweatshirts, were on the main streets of the mainly poor neighbourhoods along the city’s northeastern, southern and western boundaries, engaged in running skirmishes with police, looting hundreds of shops, setting dozens of buildings and houses ablaze.

Yes, try to solve social problems before they become unsolvable. Really confronting taboo topics such as race and iq, immigration, dysgenics, are the first step. People that are born with low IQ (a taboo topic), to low IQ parents, with dysfunctional families (that are more frequent among low IQ people) and in bad social environment (a ghetto of likewise displaced people.

But, don’t forget to save those in imminent danger, those who are threatened with physical violence. If the use of deadly force can save upstanding citizens, then it is be negligence not to use it.

Unsuccessful males, an uncontrollable force

This is a chronic problem in Britain, which has a “lost generation” of young high-school dropouts far larger than most other Western countries.

One European Union study this year found that 17 per cent of Britain’s youth are classified as “NEETs” – for Not in Employment, Education or Training, in other words high-school dropouts with no prospects of employment – the fourth-highest percentage in the European Union. There are 600,000 people under 25 in Britain who have never had a day of work.

In the EEA, low ranking unsuccessful males do not procreate. This is an evolutionary disaster. Evolutionary psychology has shown that adolescent males are pre-wired to take high risks to gain social status in order to get access to women. Daredevil behavior, risky driving, fights, murder, criminality have their greatest prevalence in adolescence.  It

Such behavior actually makes men attractive to women: bad boys were successful in the ancient EEA where female choice and attraction were formed. Nerdy studious shy males may be successful today, but were not the leaders in the EEA.

Such men used to go on crusades, on ships to discover America, engage in violent revolutions, or whatever venue could bring success in life. If they have a 50% chance of dying, and a 10% chance of becoming really successful, by the mathematics of reproductive success, it is worth the risk to those that otherwise don’t have much of a chance.

As devil’s advocate, we suggest to seriously analyze taboo solutions like ready availability of prostitution, and polyandry (which is historically practiced where one man does not have enough resources for a family. These men are serious trouble, they have nothing to lose and great determination. 

Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke has been heavily criticized for talking about "serious rape" as compared with other types of rape. But can some rapes be viewed as more serious than others?

The  word "rape" needs to be differentiated, into "serious rape", "forcible rape", "rape rape" because the word "rape" nowadays means everything.

Tyrannical political correctness speech code taboos prohibit sensible discussions

Political correctness is a speech code to silence discussion. It erects taboos: don’t talk, don’t question. Making a comment on a taboo topic yields to  ad hominem attacks, demands of resignation! Like a medieval church. The topic is taboo, critics are silenced, no discussion is allowed.

In the rape issue, there are stupid anecdotal one sided arguments.

What a stupid comment! The "victim-feminists" who claim that a drunk-party-girl-who-next-day-is-sorry-she-consented-rape is the same as the mauled-in-the-forest-at-knife-point-rape are an offense to true forcible rape victims. These are the same people that say: consensual sex with an adolescent minor is rape, the same as violently raping the adolescent minor against her or his will. And such insanity pervades world wide press and politics.

Nation-wide and world wide politics are based on such drivel. Where is the peer reviewed research that supports such statements?

Unlike the car accident example with subsequent paralysis, as shown in the articles linked above, the modern revised definition of "rape" encompasses total different things

• violent forcible rape,
• consensual sex where consent is considered invalid later on, if the "victim" convinces a judge that she was too drunk, if she was underage, if she presented a fake ID and the perpetrator could not know he did commit "rape"
• consensual sex where consent is withdrawn in the middle of the act and he continued for 5 more seconds (yes, google "5 second rape" if you don’t believe it.
• consensual sex when the woman only felt raped 2 days later when he did not call her
• consensual sex with an adolescent minor
• When is a rape not a rape? | Police Inspector Blog mentions the pervasiveness of false rape accusations but fails to mention that lots of these lead to false rape convictions:  because of the dogma "women don’t lie", and the perverted suspension of due process, the "presumption of guilt of the accused in rape cases", it is very easy to be unjustly harassed and tried for years (Kachelmann, Strauss-Kahn) and possibly convicted of rape that has never happened

I have asked many men: "Have you ever said no to a woman and she continued with sexual activities like oral sex or sex?".  Almost all of them said they told a woman "Stop, I am tired" and she just continued.This happens when a man had enough sex but an insatiable woman wants more. It could happen early in the morning when the man wants to sleep.

I believe Britain has a sexist rape law where women can not rape. But by gender neutral rape laws this clearly constitutes rape. By the feminist rape definition that a simple "no" or "stop" in a consensual sexual relationship means "rape". And this is the same as dragging a screaming woman into the forest? One guys says that someone else says. Totally anecdotal. The typical feminist victim attitude where an objectifying gaze hampers women’s intelligence and a consensual-sex-while-drunk or yielding-to-insistent-male-pressure is as bad as forcible rape.

30% of students in sex work have debts, compared to 18% of the rest of the student population. Only 50% of sex workers get financial help from relatives, compared to 65%. Surprisingly, men and women work in equal percentage in the sex industry. Only 49% are heterosexual (vs. 85% of comparison group), 33% homosexual (vs. 5.3%), 37.8% bisexual (vs. 8.8% in comparison group).

We at human-stupidity.com wish there was information about gender distribution in sexual orientation. It seems to us that heterosexual male sex workers would have restricted earning opportunities. We are surprised about the openness to prostitution and sex work, compared to the main stream media hysteria, especially in the United States (Feminist arguments against prostitution debunked)

Comparisons to attitudes the United States, Brazil, etc. would be very interesting (legal prohibitions related to prostitituion would hamper such studies) It also does not seem that these students are "trafficked" "victims" that need to be saved from their own action by feminists, justice system or political correctness police.

No major character differences could be found between sex working and other students in terms of openness, agreeableness, conscientiousness. In Berlin, 40% of students showed curiosity, in Paris 40% of students valued sex workers. 60% of sex workers cited problems like stigmatization, sexually transmitted diseases, and problems with their partners.

Brazil already has anti-discrimination laws favoring gays (in addition laws against racism, religious discrimination, etc.).  Business owners, or building managers, who disallowed public display gay deep French kissing face arrest and fines, except if they could prove they also had a history of disallowing heterosexual kissing. Hotels must not discriminate against gay couples. This law would further strengthen existing anti-discrimination laws and impose stiff jail sentences.

This attempt at passing laws criminalizing homophobia comes right after the Brazilian Supreme Court, in a rare unanimous vote, decided to take lawmaking it its own hand and declared that homosexual couples have the same rights as heterosexual couples on all issues.  For example, inheritance, joint tax declarations, joint health insurance, common law marriage, right to property acquired during cohabitation, etc. Some minor doubts remain if this includes the right for gay couples to adopt children.

No free speech, nor free academic research

Historically, for anti-discrimination laws, even science is not a valid  excuse: the book "The Bell Curve" was prohibited in Brazil because of the crime of racism, due to long existing laws against racism. The US is not much better, then president Clinton condemned the book, admittedly without having read it. But in the US nobody will be arrested and jailed for research on racial differences (they will just be harassed).

It is interesting to note that Brazil’s and Rio’s officials fought to win the title "best gay destination in the world" but are vigorously opposed to "sexual tourism", meaning heterosexual males in search of sex with Brazilian women.

The slippery slope from protecting against violence to policing words, thoughts and research

Political correctness started as a well meant attempt to correct legitimate grievances, like violence against homosexuals or other races (especially Blacks) and religion (especially Muslim), and gender discrimination (harassment). The next step, still defensible, punishes hate speech meant to directly and immediately incite violence.

So the initial intent was to outlaw "Kill blacks", "exterminate Jews", "beat faggots" speech. But that soon led to stifling thoughts and speech that hurts the sensitive of protected minorities.

It is a serious restriction to freedom of speech, freedom of thought, freedom of research to extend these anti-violence codes to

• people who tell their kids not to become homosexual or
• scholarly researcher’s writings about racial differences in IQ and criminality.
• people who warn to avoid parts of town because they are more dangerous (and predominantly black)

Homophobic jokes, Racist speech, racist jokes, can get people arrested and jailed.

Almost everything that can be said is offensive to some protected group, or actually constitutes a crime: our society suffers from overcriminalization.

Public speech, commercial advertising, is very difficult, because it is easy to offend some group, be it Blacks, Indians, women, obese, handicapped, nurses, any group whatsoever. Maybe with the exception of white males that can be bashed at will for allegedly not pertaining to a protected disadvantaged minority.

Wellington Menezes de Oliveira, gunman killer that killed 12 students last week in Rio de Janeiro, left videos where he says he is taking revenge for having been bullied and for all other bullying victims.

Human-Stupidity does not defend serial killers. But, everyone should have a right to physical safety. Physical abuse like being dumped into garbage cans, dunked into toilets, or getting tripped, punched, glasses broken clearly needs to be prevented.

These behaviors are clearly criminal and would carry jail sentences if perpetrated among adults and tried in court. Of course, they are another example that violent crime, and crime against males, does not get the same legal and press attention as sex crimes (or criminalized normal consensual sexual behavior).

In My 12 year old daughter brutally attacked by refugee boys at school. we quoted specialists saying that an essential element in bullying prevention is the interference of the silent majority, who should stop and discourage bully behavior.

He praises some other serial killers, but also a just slightly violent Casey Hines, a boy that violently body-slammed a school mate after getting punched the fourth time in a row and whose video went viral (see below).

A Brazilian gunman who shot dead 12 children at his former school in Rio de Janeiro last week before killing himself was motivated by bullying, letters he wrote have revealed.

The messages left by Wellington Menezes de Oliveira, 23, were released by police along with videos and photos.

In them, he praises a US student who killed 32 people in 2007, calling him his "brother".

The school massacre in Rio was the first of its kind in Brazil.

"I hope this serves as a lesson, especially to those school officials who stood by with their arms crossed as students were being attacked, humiliated, ridiculed," Menezes de Oliveira says in one video.

"I want to leave very clear that I am not responsible for the deaths that will occur, even though my fingers will be on the trigger," he adds, blaming the murders he went on to commit on bullies.

Menezes de Oliveira mentions that others did not help when bullied.

Fellow students gave him the nasty nickname "Swing," because he walked with a limp, said former classmate Bruno Linhares, who lamented that "the class fool turned into a criminal."

"They called him all kinds of names," said Linhares, 23, who studied with Menezes at Rio’s Tasso da Silveira school where the bloodbath took place.

For every school serial killer there are millions of mistreated, physically and emotionally abused children and adolescents. Our society has miserably failed in its duty to provide a safe environment devoid of physical and emotional harassment.  In a normal safe society where physical violence is prevented, Casey Hines’ behavior would be considered criminal excessive force in self defense.  Casey Hines is lucky he did not suffer criminal prosecution, like a German man who got years in jail for using a knife on an attacker who had already criminally knocked down his friend and had the backup of a group.

Truly civilized society starts in school and must not tolerate systematical repeated long term physical threats and violence.

• In the politically correct outrage, nobody cares about what she said.
  • Do Asians have a tendency to talk in the college library? Why do library officials not interfere? After all, she is not complaining about breach of a formality (like wearing a turban) but rather about noise that objectively disturbs the ability to study. Is the library at fault not to take up disciplinary action for distubance of peace in library? Any sociologist or political scientist up to watching behavior at the library and doing an unbiased test of her contention? And even her observations are wrong, so what?
  • Do Asians tend to have the entire large family visit them on the weekends to cook and wash their laundry? This is an interesting observation. Again, even if she is wrong, why disciplinary threats and threats of violence against her.
• Hate laws are problemetic restrictions to constitutionally guaranteed free speech. Initially they served a fairly noble cause, they were meant to prevent incitement of violence, lynching mob incitation and Adolf Hitler style rhetoric to beat up and kill Jews.  But being extended to any harmless uttering of a blonde student. failing to carefully select politically correct wording is troubling.
• She was actually pretty careful to hedge what she said. But still not enough.
• If she were an official of government, police or the University, maybe there would be a justification for using carefully selected wording. But an average citizen being vilified for some personal opinion which most likely is factually correct?
• Human Stupidity has examples where political correctness has serious consequences. From not scanning people at airports (body scans are "child porn") to searching old white ladies in equal frequency as young muslim men, to restriction of academic research about child sexuality and racial differences.

In an attempt to produce a humorous YouTube video, I have offended the UCLA community and the entire Asian culture. I am truly sorry for the hurtful words I said and the pain it caused to anyone who watched the video. Especially in the wake of the ongoing disaster in Japan, I would do anything to take back my insensitive words. I could write apology letters all day and night, but I know they wouldn’t erase the video from your memory, nor would they act to reverse my inappropriate action.

I made a mistake. My mistake, however, has lead to the harassment of my family, the publishing of my personal information, death threats, and being ostracized from an entire community. Accordingly, for personal safety reasons, I have chosen to no longer attend classes at UCLA.
